SF Miniatures
Care & Feeding

Notes

The SF minis are vintage pieces, cast c. 1983 or so. As might be expected, the quality (amount of flash, detail etc) simply do not compare with "modern" (mid to late 90's) minis. They're mostly pretty good, but do not expect them to be, say, WH40K quality. The aliens are of course the only castings of the SF aliens ever produced; however, for human minis you are better off using more recent sci fi minis (see below for recommendations).

SF minis were cast by Ral Partha. Minis from the early 80's were cast in true 25mm scale. Many companies have since gone to the oversized 25mm (actually closer to 28mm) scale pioneered by Citadel / Games Workshop. Take this into account when mixing and matching SF minis with other varieties.

Sets

The 2 sets most useful to SF GM's and players are the boxed sets "Player Characters" and "Spacefarers". Both sets have at least 2 of each UPF race and a pair of Sathar to boot.

Player Characters: this set includes 12 minis; amusingly, 5 of them are in spacesuits (as opposed to just 1 in suits / armor in the Spacefarers set). Go figure (pun not intended). Most of the minis in this set are in true 25mm scale (including the humans, Yaz and Dralasites). However, the Sathar and Vrusk are oversized (28mm) and would work well with other such figures. For some reason, most of the minis from these sets have some sort of blue-grey crud on them (probably baked on powder from the casting mold) and will need some cleaning (see below).

Spacefarers: this set also includes 12 minis; these are notably better quality than the ones from the PC boxed set. They do not have that odd crud on them, and overall detail is much better (you can make out individual mortar rounds on the one Sathar's belt). Scale is again mixed. Humans, Vrusk, Dralasites and sathar are all true 25mm scale; this time the Yazirians are oversized by comparison (28mm scale) - if you want Yaz that look right next to WH40K or Warzone minis, you want these Yaz. The Vrusk are a little small going by the sizes from the AD Rulebook, but look better than the PC set models. If you only buy one set, get Spacefarers.

Blister packs: these mostly were the Volturnus critters form the modules and / or KH ships; the aliens and critters were lower quality than the boxed set minis and not sculpted very well - mostly of interest to the collector (the ship minis were better and a must for KH players using minis) next page
