Introduction ============ It is standard for starship to be constructed with enough armor plating to withstand micrometeors and tiny space junk. Without such protection, any starship would be pounded to bits over time. Large pieces of space junk, whether created by a race or the universe itself can still do considerable damage to a starship. Luckily, the sensors aboard will detect and alert the crew to anything of mass that can do damage to the starship. The basic hull points for a starship represents not only the internal structural integrity of the starship, but also this standard hull plating. Basic military starships are built in the same way. Any hull points above this minimum represents the amount of armor plating added for defensive purposes. This makes the starship harder to defeat in combat and more able to take a pounding from larger space junk. However, there are limits to the amount of armor that can be attached to a starship. The limiting factor for most starship captains would be the cost of the armor itself, which is not cheap. The size of the construction center helps to determain the cost as well, with the smaller the center, the more expensive it is to add armor. The other limiting factor is the size of the ship itself. The larger the starship, the more armor it's structure can support. However, the larger the starship, the more it costs to put armor on it. The starships are able to add armor not to exceed the original hull points minus double the Hull Size. A starship which does not contain any extra armor is considered unarmored. Almost all civilian ships and a number of military ships fall into this catagory. A starship that contains up to 33% of the maximum allowed armor is considered to have light armor. A starship with up to 66% of the maximum allowed armor is considered to have medium armor. Any starship with more than 66% of the maxium allowed armor is considered to have heavy armor. Max Armor Formula: Maxium Armor Hull Points = Standard Hull Points - (Hull Size x 2) Maximum Armor Chart =================== HS Standard HP Max Armor HP Notes -- ----------- ------------ ----- 1 5 3 Fighters have heavy armor (3) 2 10 6 3 15 9 Assualt Scouts are unarmored 4 20 12 5 25 15 Frigates have heavy armor (15) 6 30 18 7 35 21 8 40 24 9 45 27 10 50 30 11 55 33 12 60 36 Light Cruisers have light armor (10) 13 65 39 14 70 42 15 75 45 16 80 48 17 85 51 18 90 54 19 95 57 20 100 60 Battleships have medium armor (20) Armor Costs =========== The weight and expensive of the armor would be a factor of the HS and Armor: cost * HS * Armor HP Construction Center Cost Multipler ------------------- -------------- Class I 4,000 Cr Class II 5,000 Cr Class III 6,000 Cr Examples ======== A HS 5 freighter at a Class I would cost a total of 250,000 Cr for the hull and 0 Cr for the armor. A HS 5 frigate would cost a total of 250,000 Cr of the hull and 300,000 Cr for the 15 Armor HP (4000 Cr * 15 AHP * 5 HS). The Battleship would cost a total of 1,000,000 Cr for the hull and 1,600,000 Cr for the 20 Armor HP.
